‘Royalty’ features tight and polished production from OJ Hodding and a hypnotic blend of sultry Spanish guitar and heavy 808s underpinning the track. Its minimal, dusky levels shift around you in a sensual, whole-body experience that Shae Universe has no trouble conjuring in her songwriting. Dynamic and versatile flows from poet-turned-rapper Kojey Radical breathe grime rudiments and drill-infused attitude into the track.
Radical gave Universe her first ever feature on his own track ‘700 Pennies’ in 2017, back when she was just newly established as her own artist. Fast forward a few years later, and Universe chose to return the favour by selecting Radical as the first artist she’s ever featured on a track of her own on the lead up to her first ever full-length project. “He welcomed me because he just believed in my gift,” she said. “The full circle is exquisite.”
“This song was written for my tribe around the world,” Universe explains. “It’s an anthem for all kings and queens to empower themselves with. It took me a long time to comfortably sit in my own worth for a multitude of reasons, many of which were subconscious influences that I was completely oblivious to until recent years, and I know many other people have experienced the same or are still somewhere in that unlearning process. This song is a reminder that you’ve got this and you’re worthy.”
“Gimme my crown,” Universe repeats throughout, and again on the outro, staking her claim as she prepares for a sure and powerful reign. A masterful manifestor who is truly starting 2021 on a high, this will be the year we see the universe unfold for Shae.
‘Royalty (ft. Kojey Radical)’ is out now on all digital streaming platforms.
