Track of the Week:
Yakul - ‘Company ft. Mereba (Rework)’

February 16, 2021

Brighton’s future soul mainstays Yakul enlist LA-based Mereba for a beefed up rework of their highest streaming song to date, ‘Company’, co-produced by three-time Grammy winner Sam Barsh whose credits include Tiana Major9, Anderson .Paak and Kendrick Lamar.

Opening with swirling keys and lush vocals from James Berkeley, four-piece Yakul’s ‘Company’ rework features a fresh electronic drum track that transforms its jazzy origins into an R&B hit replete with stunning harmonies and angelic vocals courtesy of LA singer/songwriter Mereba, whose critically acclaimed 2019 debut LP The Jungle is the Only Way Out featured collaborations from 6LACK and JID.

‘Company’ is about having an infatuation with someone who’s super unhealthy for you but every time you see them you get caught up in the game. The power dynamic keeps shifting back and forth until you finally manage to drag yourself out and back to reality,” Berkeley explains. “We’ve had this song for about eighteen months now, which is generally longer than we usually sit on a tune for, but we wanted to wait until the right moment to put it out.”

Yakul’s 2019 debut EP Getting Late garnered support from tastemakers Gilles Peterson on BBC Radio 6 and Jamz Supernova on BBC 1Xtra, while the EP’s lead track ‘Blossoming’ was voted #6 ‘Track of the Year’ at the prestigious 2020 Worldwide Awards. The band was also nominated for ‘Best Jazz Act of the Year’ at the Urban Music Awards. In November last year they released their Kaleidoscope EP, now capping the cycle with this latest release.

Drawing influence from J Dilla, D’Angelo and Hiatus Kaiyote, Yakul cut an idiosyncratic figure in British music. Marrying introspective emotive lyrics with deep grooves and jazz-infused progressions, their sound is matchless in its depth and voracious fusion of styles. Further cementing their status at the forefront of the international resurgent neo-soul movement, ‘Company’ crystallises all the things that Yakul have been praised for: their incredible energy, musicality and musical chemistry, into three minutes of tight jazz-pop songwriting.

‘Company ft. Mereba (Rework)’ is out now on all digital streaming platforms.
